Waltham Abbey

Waltham Abbey is named after the Abbey itself, which is surrounded by history. The church is home to the ‘Holy Cross’ which was rumoured to have healing powers. And is the church which King Harold founded and went to pray before his eventual fall on the battlefield against William the Conqueror in 1066 at the Battle of Hastings. The Gatehouse and Bridge are still preserved and is a great attraction, and the beautiful surroundings around the ruins are perfect for a stroll and to take in some of the local wildlife.

Epping Forest lies between Greater London and Essex. It is a huge ancient woodland (almost 6000 acres) and has long history. It was used by Henry VIII and Elizabeth I as a hunting ground. It is home to important wildlife and is perfect place to get back to nature, and take in the amazing scenery it has to offer.

Sitting within 75 acres of scenic natural parkland the Royal Gunpowder Mills has at least 21 historically important buildings. Established in the 17th Century, the mills were acquired by the crown in 1787 and became an important industry for the surrounding area. The production houses are open for you to explore within this beautiful setting.

Rural Essex is a walking haven with small market towns, traditional villages and hamlets interconnected by quite country lanes. There are views of mighty oaks and ashes amongst small woodlands throughout farmland sculpted by nature. There are many trails and walks for you to take, old historic parklands to visit. There are also events such as the Hay Making Festival where you can sample real Essex fare such as asparagus and "Little Scarlet" strawberries.
